Vogel Library Strategic Plan

January 2024 - December 2025 (Published January 16, 2024)

Strategic Initiative B:
Serve as educator and facilitator on information literacy in an increasingly complex information landscape

Goal 1: Embed Library resources into Canvas to increase ease of access to Library resources tailored to course-specific success

Point Person: Library Director & College Librarian

Supporting: Information Literacy and Student Success Librarian, Information Literacy and Technology Librarian, Information Literacy and Community Engagement Librarian, Instructional Designer

Narrative: As a result of direct faculty request, the Library intends to begin the process of embedding Library resources into Canvas, the college LMS. This will allow course-specific sources to be highlighted and more accessible to students and foster a greater relationship between departments and liaison librarians.  As this will be a complex and ongoing process, courses slated for instruction in the Fall 2024 and under the new THRIVE general education plan will take priority at instructor request.

Note: Embedding Library resources into Canvas will not be done at the sacrifice of making all resources available through the Library website.

Goal 2: Establish roaming reference that pushes Library resources outside of the physical building

Point Person: Library Director & College Librarian

Supporting: Information Literacy and Student Success Librarian, Information Literacy and Technology Librarian, Information Literacy and Community Engagement Librarian, Faculty

Narrative: By working with liaison departments, Librarians will seek to establish informal office hours outside of the library building to build library-student connections.

Goal 3: Increase visibility of reference librarians on the service floor of the Library with a physical reference desk

Point Person: Library Director & College Librarian

Supporting: Information Literacy and Student Success Librarian, Information Literacy and Technology Librarian, Information Literacy and Community Engagement Librarian

Narrative: While the Library currently has one service point and most Professional Librarians have offices with external doors, accessing Librarians can be a daunting prospect for some students. By initiating an exposed, Librarian-specific service desk, this may eliminate potentially intimidating barriers. The Library will work to identify an appropriate location for this and develop a service model to test it’s possible success.

Point Person: College Archivist

Supporting: Faculty

Narrative: The Wartburg College Archives and the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting are distinctions for the institution and can be experiential learning opportunities for students. The College Archivist will work to create connections with individual faculty members and work collaboratively to find suitable opportunities for archival support and instruction in the classroom.

Point Person: Library Director & College Librarian

Supporting: Information Literacy and Student Success Librarian, Information Literacy and Technology Librarian, Information Literacy and Community Engagement Librarian, Assistant Dean for Assessment

Narrative: Using updated Student Learning Outcomes on information fluency, librarians will work in collaboration with faculty to concretely establish, in student-friendly terms, what information literacy looks like at each level of the academic journey. Further, they will work to make these elements universally understood in the establishment of cohesive instruction for all Professional Librarians and those endeavoring to support information literacy in the classroom.
