Purpose
The Kreativwerkstatt (German for “creative workstation”; aka K-statt) is a space to explore, tinker, learn, create, and share.
Makerspace Use
- Use of the K-statt is open to current students, faculty and staff of Wartburg College who acknowledge they have fully read and understand the K-statt Policy. Faculty and campus groups may reserve the K-statt by completing the library room reservation form.
- Use of the K-statt's equipment is on a first-come first-served basis taking into account the following priority order:
- faculty who have reserved the space for a course
- campus groups who have reserved the space
- students completing projects for course work
- students completing projects for personal use
- faculty and staff
- Unless scheduled for use by faculty or a campus group, up to fifteen (15) persons may be in the K-statt at one time.
- The K-statt may not be used to create items that are:
- prohibited by local, state or federal law.
- unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or pose an immediate threat to the well-being of others. (Such use may violate an equipment manufacturer’s terms of use.)
- obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library or campus environment (see the Wartburg College Code of Student Conduct).
- in violation of another’s intellectual property rights. For example, replicating another’s design or article of manufacture may infringe on the copyright, patent, or trademark of such property.
- mass produced for commercial use.
NB: This is not an exhaustive list and will evolve at the discretion of the Vogel Library staff.
- Prototyping, experimentation, and testing are encouraged in the K-statt.
- Users of the K-statt agree to this statement regarding intellectual property:
I warrant that I am authorized to use the applicable files, data, images, or any other materials (collectively “Content”) for my projects and that the use of the Content will not infringe upon any third-party’s copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret or other proprietary or intellectual property rights.
- Projects are the sole responsibility of the creator, including the final use of the finished product. If a project requires storage, speak with the library supervisor on duty. Projects that remain in the K-statt at the end of the day will be considered abandoned and become the responsibility of Vogel Library staff.
- Materials and supplies may change based on availability and current demand. Requests for specific items are welcome but are fulfilled at the discretion of Vogel Library staff.
- Donations of materials or equipment to the K-statt are accepted at the discretion of the Vogel Library staff.
- To protect equipment, supplies and projects, food is not allowed in the K-statt. Drinks are allowed if they are in a sturdy, spill-proof container.
- Users of the K-statt may be held financially responsible for damage or loss of facilities, equipment or tools due to their actions, inaction or carelessness.
- Any questions regarding this policy may be directed to the Library Director or the supervisor on duty.
Courtesy
Users of the K-statt will:
- recognize this is a shared space, free to use, being respectful of others’ time, creations and belongings
- help to create a respectful environment of cooperation, safe exploration, and creativity
- help to create a safe environment by following all posted safety guidelines
- only use what they need, leaving materials for others to use
- ask a staff member for help when uncomfortable or uncertain of how to use any of the equipment or materials
- report problems or broken equipment immediately to the supervisor on duty
- return equipment and supplies to the appropriate storage areas/containers and keep the common work areas clean
- share their knowledge and assist others to use the space, equipment and materials appropriately
Safety Guidelines
Following are general guidelines for safety in the K-statt. Specific safety guidelines are posted near each piece of equipment.
- Exercise caution when using anything sharp or hot in the space.
- If something is broken or doesn't work, inform a staff member. You are not obligated to repair an item. However, if you know how to fix the problem, fix it with the staff member.
- Keep the floor clear of sharp objects, clutter, wires, and/or trip hazards.
- Know where the first aid kit and fire extinguisher are located.
- Immediately report any injuries to the supervisor on duty.
- Ask questions if you are unsure about how to operate any equipment in the K-statt. We want to help!
Vogel Library is not responsible for any damage to persons or property as a result of the use, misuse or failure of any equipment or supplies furnished or loaned to a patron.
Failure to follow the rules, policies and safety guidelines as stated above will result in loss of K-statt privileges for the remainder of the term. A patron may appeal against the loss of privileges through the Library Director.
