Vogel Library's Mission and Policies

Loans and Fees Policies

Vogel Library's primary clients are students, faculty and staff at Wartburg College. In addition, we serve library patrons of Iowa through the Open Access program which entitles public library users to borrow materials from participating libraries in Iowa.

Wartburg Students, Faculty, Staff & Emeriti

Your Wartburg College photo identification card serves as your library card. We ask that you have your card with you to borrow materials from the library. You will be held responsible for all materials borrowed using your card.

Community, Public Library Patrons & Alumni

By presenting your public library card or Iowa identification, you are entitled to receive a borrower's card from Vogel Library. Public patrons may check out materials from the library and may use resources in-house. However, Vogel Library does not provide public patrons inter-library loan services, course reserve materials, technology items, world instruments, or remote access to electronic resources; patrons are encouraged to seek these services at their local public library. These policies also apply to Eisenach residents.

Wartburg alumni are encouraged to set up a community account to continue to use Vogel Library.

The nearest public library is Waverly Public Library (WPL), just a few blocks west of campus. You may set up a WPL account at Vogel Library or at WPL. A state-issued ID is required. See the link below for more information about Waverly Public Library.

Return is defined as returning the item in its original form to Vogel Library.

Book Drops:

  • A book drop is located in the library’s ground floor south entrance and is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Items can be returned at any time in this book drop and thus returns do not need to be limited to the library’s open hours.
  • A second book drop is located on the 2nd floor, just outside of the library’s exit/entrance to the skywalk.

Technology Items:

  • Technology items and equipment should not be returned in the book drop and must be returned to the 2nd floor circulation desk to avoid damaging the item.

6-hour Materials:

  • Materials that check out for 6-hours must be returned at closing. They cannot be kept overnight.

A renewal is defined as extending a current loan for a 2nd loan period. For example, a student has checked out a book for a semester. At the end of that semester, they can renew that item for one more semester. Most items* can be renewed once, examples include books, scores, CDs, curriculum, and puzzles. Items must be returned by the new due date. Renewals may be made:

  • In person at the 2nd floor circulation desk
  • By emailing library.circulation@wartburg.edu
  • By calling 319-352-8500
  • Through a patron’s library account by visiting My Library Account (linked below)

*Bicycles, technology items, equipment, and course reserves may not be renewed and must be returned by the original due date and time.

Extended Loans are defined as loans that are extended beyond their maximum loan period. The granting of extended loans for library materials will be made on a case-by-case basis. For example, a faculty member who is using books for a research project may need to extend a loan beyond the two academic year maximum loan period (this includes the original loan period plus one renewal). This is not a guarantee, but a potential example. Every extended loan request is handled individually.

To request an extended loan, please contact the library through one of the following methods:

To request extended loans for equipment, please fill out the Reserve Equipment Form (linked below) at least two (2) business days in advance of when it will be needed. Alternatively, you may contact the Technology Librarian, Renée Barney (renee.barney@wartburg.edu) to request equipment.

Holds are defined as placing a request for an item to be held for a short period of time for pickup at the 2nd floor circulation desk. Books, Periodicals, Scores, CDs, and DVDs can be placed on hold. If the item is not picked up after two weeks, the item will be taken off of hold and reshelved. Technology items, Makerspace items, course reserves, bikes, and equipment such as folding camp chairs cannot be placed on hold, and are available on a first come, first served basis.

To place a hold:

1. In OneSearch, click on the title of the item you'd like to place a hold on.

Alternatively, you can request a hold by contacting the Circulation Supervisor:

Recalls are defined as when another patron requests an item that is already checked out. This request places a recall on the item. The due date will not change, but the item cannot be renewed. The patron who currently has the item checked out will be notified by email about the recall. When a recall is initiated, we ask that you consider returning the item before the original due date when possible. The person who requested the item will be notified by email when the item is returned and available for them to pick up.

Late Materials are defined as items that are not returned to Vogel Library by their due date. When an item is not returned by the due date, late notices are emailed, alerting patrons to the fines and fees accrued. These notices are sent automatically from library.circulation@wartburg.edu. Please be sure you are receiving these emails, and they are not going to your spam or junk mail folders.

Fine Schedule for Late Material

  • Books, DVDs, Puzzles, Scores, etc. $0.50/day*
  • Laptops, Bagged Technology, Games (indoor and outdoor), and Bikes: $1.00/hour*
  • Course Reserves: (4-hour and 24-hour): $1.00/hour*

*not to exceed $10 per item

The Fine Schedule is designed to encourage patrons to return library materials on time so that these valuable and limited resources are available to others, who have an equal right to use them. Extenuating circumstances will always be considered by library staff when communicated to us.

Three weeks after the due date an unreturned item will be considered lost. Late fines still apply in addition to the lost fees listed in the Lost & Damaged section on this guide.

Lost Materials are defined as items that are still unreturned three weeks or longer after their due date. Damaged materials are defined as items that are returned in a condition where the item is no longer usable.

Material that is considered lost or damaged is assessed a fee equal to the replacement cost of the item. If the replacement cost cannot be determined, a minimum $20 fee will be assessed.

For material marked as lost, the replacement fee will be waived if the item is returned within two months of the lost notification. However, the borrower is still responsible for payment of late fees.

Questions related to fees can be directed to the Circulation Supervisor (library.circulation@wartburg.edu).

Loan Limits are defined as the maximum number of items one patron can check out at one time.

  • Faculty and staff can checkout up to 100 items at one time.
  • Students can checkout up to 50 items at one time.
  • Community patrons can checkout up to 10 items at one time.

EXCEPTION: Laptops and iPads (available only to faculty, staff, and students) are limited to one per person at a time.
