Vogel Library's primary clients are students, faculty, and staff at Wartburg College. In addition, we serve library patrons of Iowa through the Open Access program which entitles public library users to check out materials from participating libraries in Iowa.
Your Wartburg College photo identification card serves as your library card. We ask that you have your card with you to check out materials from the library. You will be held responsible for all materials checked out using your card.
By presenting your public library card or Iowa identification, you are entitled to receive a library card from Vogel Library. Public patrons may check out materials from the library and may use resources in-house. However, Vogel Library does not provide public patrons inter-library loan services, course reserve materials, technology items, world instruments, or remote access to electronic resources; patrons are encouraged to seek these services at their local public library. These policies also apply to Eisenach residents.
Wartburg alumni are encouraged to set up a community account to continue to use Vogel Library.
The nearest public library is Waverly Public Library (WPL), just a few blocks west of campus. You may set up a WPL account at Vogel Library or at WPL. A state-issued ID is required. See the link below for more information about Waverly Public Library.
* Note: Due dates may be affected by holidays and academic breaks.
A return is defined as returning the item in its original form to Vogel Library.
A renewal is defined as extending a current loan for a 2nd loan period.
For example, a student has checked out a book for a term. At the end of that term, they can renew that item for one more term. Most items* can be renewed once, examples include books, scores, CDs, DVDs, and puzzles. Items must be returned by the new due date.
Please note, items cannot be returned and immediately checked back out; this violates the renewals policy. Extended loans**, approved by a supervisor, are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Renewals may be made:
*Bicycles, technology items, equipment, games, and course reserves may not be renewed and must be returned by the original due date and time.
**See the Extended Loans tab for more information.
Extended Loans are defined as loans that are extended beyond their maximum loan period.
The granting of extended loans for library materials will be made on a case-by-case basis.
For example, a library supervisor may approve an extension for a faculty member who is using books for a research project and may need to extend a loan beyond the two academic year maximum loan period (this includes the original loan period plus one renewal).
To request an extended loan, please contact a library supervisor through one of the following methods:
To request extended loans for equipment, please fill out the Reserve Equipment Form (linked below) at least two (2) business days in advance of when it will be needed. Alternatively, you may contact the Technology Librarian, Renée Barney (renee.barney@wartburg.edu) to request equipment.
Holds are defined as placing a request for an item to be held for up to two weeks at the 2nd floor circulation desk in order for the requesting patron to check out the item. Holds can be placed on items that are currently available in the collection or items that are currently on loan to another patron.
Holds on items that are available in the collection will be removed from the stacks by library staff and held for two weeks for pickup at the 2nd floor circulation desk.
Due dates on items already checked out will not change. Holds on these items will place you on a waiting list. You will be contacted when the current patron returns the item. Items will be held at the 2nd floor circulation desk for two weeks. The patron who currently has the item on loan will not be able to renew the item.
Hold requests can be placed by the patron or by library staff.
Books, Periodicals, Scores, CDs, and DVDs can be placed on hold. If the item is not picked up after two weeks, the item will be taken off hold and reshelved. Technology items, Makerspace items, course reserves, bikes, and equipment such as folding camp chairs cannot be placed on hold, and are available on a first come, first served basis.
To place a hold:
1. In OneSearch, click on the title of the item you'd like to place a hold on.
2. In the record information view, click the Sign In button and sign in to your library account (Wartburg account):
3. When logged in, click on the Request link:
4. You do not need to fill in the form. Just click Send Request.
Your hold request has been placed! You'll receive an email when your item is ready for pickup.
Alternatively, you can request a hold by contacting a library supervisor:
Recalls are defined as a special hold placed by library staff which requests an item on loan is returned before the original due date.
The due date will be changed. The patron who currently has the item checked out will be notified by email about the recall.
When a recall is initiated, we ask that you please return the item on or before the new due date.
Recalls are rare and will only be initiated when there is a great need for an item to be returned. An example would be if the item is needed for instructional purposes.
Late Items are defined as items that are not returned to Vogel Library by their due date.
When an item is not returned by the due date, late notices are emailed alerting patrons to the fines and fees accrued. These notices are sent automatically from library.circulation@wartburg.edu. These emails may go to your spam, junk, or other folders.
*not to exceed $10 per item
The Fine Schedule is designed to encourage patrons to return library materials on time so that these valuable and limited resources are available to others, who have an equal right to use them. Extenuating circumstances will always be considered by library supervisors when communicated to us.
Three weeks after the due date an unreturned item will be considered lost. Late fines still apply in addition to the lost fees listed in the Lost & Damaged tab on this guide.
Blocks are defined as a restriction on a patron's account, which prevents them from checking out more items.
The following conditions will initiate a block:
Lost Items are defined as items that are still unreturned three weeks or longer after their due date.
Damaged items are defined as items that are returned in a condition where the item is no longer usable or requires repair.
Items that are considered lost or damaged are assessed a fee equal to the replacement or repair cost of the item. If the replacement or repair cost cannot be determined, a minimum $20 fee will be assessed.
For items marked as lost, the replacement fee will be waived if the item is returned within two months of the lost notification. However, the borrower is still responsible for payment of late fees.
Questions related to fees can be directed to a library supervisor (library.circulation@wartburg.edu). More information can be found on the Late Items & Blocks tab.
Loan Limits are defined as the maximum number of items one patron can have checked out at one time.
EXCEPTION: Laptops and iPads (available only to faculty, staff, and students) are limited to one item per person at a time.
