Black Hawk Broadcasting Corporate Collection
Preface
The purpose of the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting is to establish and maintain a permanent collection of materials relating to the history, development and contribution of radio and television in Iowa.
The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors. Due to the complexity and variety of audiovisual formats, most items will need to be digitally duplicated or transferred before access can be provided.
Introduction
Abstract: This collection is primarily legal documents pertaining to the Black Hawk Broadcasting Company based in Waterloo, Iowa. The majority of the documents are related to the purchase and sale of several of Black Hawk’s various properties. Those properties include: KWWL-TV TV in Waterloo, Iowa; KAAL-TV, Austin, Minnesota; KCBC radio in Des Moines, Iowa; KTIV-TV in Sioux City, Iowa; KLWW radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; KFMW/KWWL radio, Waterloo, Iowa; and the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Waterloo and Mason City, Iowa. There are a large number of legal documents pertaining to the merger of Black Hawk Broadcasting and American Family Insurance (AFLAC). The collection includes original stock certificates issued on January 28, 1947.
The collection also contains papers and video tapes from Robert Buckmaster. Buckmaster was an original investor and later the CEO of Black Hawk Broadcasting.

Biographical Sketch/Agency History
History: The Black Hawk Broadcasting Company was formally founded on January 28, 1947 when the first stock was issued to a group of Waterloo, Iowa businessmen. The company owned KWWL radio in Waterloo, which went on the air in 1947. KWWL-TV began broadcasting in November 1953. The company later expanded purchasing KLWW radio in Cedar Rapids; KTIV-TV in Sioux City; KAAL-TV in Austin, Minnesota; and KCBC radio in Des Moines.
