The purpose of the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting is to establish and maintain a permanent collection of materials relating to the history, development and contribution of radio and television in Iowa.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors. Biographical Sketch

History: Grant Price was an Iowa broadcast journalism icon and college professor. His professional career spanned nearly 50 years at five radio and TV stations. He briefly retired before Wartburg College President Robert Vogel convinced him to come out of retirement in the early 1990’s and begin the college’s broadcast journalism program. He continued to teach journalism courses at Wartburg until retiring from teaching in 2005.

During his teaching career at Wartburg, Price also founded the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting, located in Wartburg’s Vogel Library. He continued to serve as the Archives’ director until shortly before his death in 2008 at the age of 85. In 1994, Price began an “Oral History Project,” a series of video interviews with people important to Iowa’s broadcast history. The interviews are kept in the Archives.

Price began his professional journalism career in 1941 at KSCJ radio in Sioux City. He also worked at KTRI in Sioux City as a one-person news department, before becoming news director at KXEL radio in Waterloo. He moved into television in 1959, becoming news editor and later Director of News Services at WMT radio and TV. Price led the station’s news department to the number one ratings position in the Waterloo-Cedar Rapids market. Price moved to KWWL-TV and radio in 1972 to become that station’s vice president for news and public affairs. Two years after his arrival, KWWL became number one in the market’s news ratings, a position the station held for 30 consecutive years.

Price was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Jack Shelley Award for “outstanding contributions to Iowa broadcast journalism” from the Iowa Broadcast News Association. He was a recipient of the Mitch Charnley Award by the Northwest Broadcast News Association “for distinguished service to broadcast news.” The Iowa Broadcasters named Price to its Hall of Fame in 1999.
