Streaming Film Databases
Revised and expanded explanations of how to make our streaming film options work for you!
We have a robust DVD film collection, and we welcome any additional purchase requests, but sometimes a streaming film option is more desirable. Here is an overview of our streaming film options as of Fall 2021:
AVON (Academic Video Online):
This is largely documentary and nonfiction films; everything in this database should be accessible as soon as you click on it.
See the embedding page on this guide for embed instructions.
Kanopy and Swank
These two databases provide access to feature films, both fiction and documentary, and their selections are almost entirely unique from each other. For example, Kanopy has 400+ Criterion films, while Swank has the full Hitchcock catalog.
Because these two databases do not currently have the most ideal searching and requesting abilities, feel free to email your streaming film requests directly to email@example.com. If you would like to climb the small learning curve and search and request on your own, follow the steps on the pages on this guide.
NEW MEDIATED ACCESS 6/1/21The entire Kanopy collection can be searched, but you will have to fill out a request form on the film's page and wait for approval in order to view. This is free to you but does necessitate planning ahead. Contact the library with any questions!
Kanopy is a streaming database of over 30,000 ad-free films--feature films, foreign films, documentaries, and more.
Streaming film licenses and copyright restrictions need to be improved for education and access. Read the article linked below to learn why you should start advocating your representatives to make these progressive changes.
