The purpose of the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting is to establish and maintain a permanent collection of materials relating to the history, development and contribution of radio and television in Iowa.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors. Due to the complexity and variety of audiovisual formats, most items will need to be digitally duplicated or transferred before access can be provided.

Biographical Sketch

History: Cliff Brockman was an Iowa broadcast journalist for 32 years and a college journalism educator for 14 years before retiring in 2018. During his professional career, he worked in TV and radio news as a reporter, assignment editor, producer, and news director. As a college professor, he taught print and broadcast reporting and editing, TV and video production, and Media Law & Ethics. He advised two student newspapers: the Augustana College (Ill.) Observer in 1982 and the Wartburg Trumpet during all but his first year at Wartburg. Brockman created and advised the Wartburg Circuit, a student media website. His research interests primarily centered on student online media.

Brockman received numerous awards during his career, including: the Jack Shelley Award, the highest award an Iowa broadcast journalist can receive (for outstanding contributions to journalism), two national Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) awards for The Circuit, and the national Ken Nordin Award from the ACP for outstanding research.

Active in the Iowa Broadcast News Association during both careers, Brockman served as president, vice-president, was on the board of directors numerous times, and served on numerous committees. He also edited the IBNA’s newsletter for several years, and later created and edited the IBNA’s online newsletter. He continues to write occasional articles for the group’s website.

A lifelong member of the Lutheran church (ELCA), Brockman served on church councils in each church he belonged to as well as numerous committees at both the local and synod levels.

Also active in community affairs, he served on committees and boards in the cities where he resided. In Waverly, he oversaw students to broadcast all Waverly City Council and other city meetings for 11 years.
