Preface

The purpose of the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting is to establish and maintain a permanent collection of materials relating to the history, development and contribution of radio and television in Iowa.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors. Due to the complexity and variety of audiovisual formats, most items will need to be digitally duplicated or transferred before access can be provided.

 

Introduction

Abstract: Rutz’s Collection from Broadcast series, generally contains audio and video recordings of political issues concerning Iowa such as: Governors talking about the political condition of the State, Senators speeches, Political debates, Political Activism, etc. The Collection also contains a great deal of Economy content such as Governors relating the political condition of Iowa to economics, Farm Businesses/Industries, Food Companies, Administration, Agriculture in Iowa, etc. Entertainment is also present in Rutz’s collection because there is another section in the collection about sports, which contains audiocassettes of coaches analyzing matches and sport players expressing their opinions about their matches.

Extent: 3 boxes of Broadcast Recordings, 132 Audio and Video cassettes.

Biographical Sketch

History:

  • Journalist at the Iowa General Assembly Senate in 1984. Julie Rutz was one of the chosen people from the Secretary of the Senate in charge of KRNT radio.
  • In 1984 Rutz was chosen to represent KRNT Radio in the Journal of the House of the General Assembly of the State of Iowa.
  • The most of Julie Rutz’s work (audiocassettes) was produced by KRNT Radio. KRNT Radio is a radio station broadcasting a sports format. In 1945, the station won a Peabody Award for its outstanding reporting of news. KRNT Radio serves as the broadcast outlet for several sports teams such as: Drake University athletics, Chicago Cubs baseball and Green Bay Packers football. Its studios are located in Des Moines.
  • Rutz’s videocassettes were produced by WOI – TV. On the 21st of February 1950, WOI – TV signed on air and it was the second largest television station and the first in Des Moines. The station was originally owned by Iowa State University in Ames along with its noncommercial WOI radio stations, making it the first commercial station owned by a major college.
