William B. Quarton Collection
Preface
The purpose of the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting is to establish and maintain a permanent collection of materials relating to the history, development and contribution of radio and television in Iowa.
The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors. Due to the complexity and variety of audiovisual formats, most items will need to be digitally duplicated or transferred before access can be provided.
Introduction
Abstract: The collection is material from 1937 – 2005 during William Quarton’s time as owner and general manager of WMT radio and TV in Cedar Rapids. There is also material from Quarton’s service to the National Broadcaster’s Association and the CBS television network board of affiliates, and the White House Conference on International rights. The collection includes a series of First Day Issue stamps that Quarton sent to advertisers as an unusual thank-you promotion for buying advertising on the WMT stations.

Biographical Sketch/Agency History
History: William B. Quarton was a noted Iowa broadcast executive, spending most of his career at WMT radio and TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Quarton also established Cablevision of Iowa, providing cable TV service to small towns in Iowa.
He was active in the National Association of Broadcasters, serving as its chairperson in 1963. He was also a member of the CBS radio and TV affiliates board of directors, and the first president of the Iowa Broadcasters Association.
Quarton was active in a number of other organizations:
As a philanthropist, Quarton supported the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, and left a $35 million gift to the foundation at the time of his death. The donation was used to establish the William Quarton Heritage Society, creating endowments for four organizations.
Timeline:
1931: Worked at KWCR radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
1935: Helped merge KWCR with WMT radio in Cedar Rapids.
1938: WMT joined the CBS radio network.
1943: Became WMT station manager.
1949: Hired Walter Cronkite as the station’s Washington correspondent.
1952: First president of the Iowa Broadcasters Association.
1953 (Sept.) WMT-TV signed on the air.
1963: Chairman of the National Association of Broadcasters.
1968: Retired from WMT radio and TV.
1969: Elected to Iowa Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
2005: Published his autobiography, “Lucky Man: Memories of a life in Communications.”
2007 (Aug. 19): Died at age 104.
