Citation styles vary by discipline. The variation reflects the most important aspects of the citation for a particular discipline. for example, in the sciences the names of the scientists are of great importance because often a scientist's career develops around a research agenda and bringing together the work of that scientist can provide an historic view of the development of knowledge in that particular research agenda.
