Leadership Studies (Graduate)

The purpose of this guide is to support the research needs of students in the Master of Arts in Leadership program at Wartburg College.

Key Databases for Leadership

When you're looking for articles related to a specific topic, databases are a good place to start. Using one of the recommended databases below will allow you to search all of the contents of that database with one search. Each database has its own subject-specific focus, so decide for your topic if there is a discipline that most intersects with your interest in leadership. Many articles are available full-text and provide either a PDF or a link to access the full-text. Those that Vogel Library does not have access to can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

You can look at the entire list of databases offered at Vogel Library at the A-Z Databases link below.

If you're new to database searching, or it's been a while since you put those skills into practice. Here are a couple of company-specific YouTube videos to help you perform an advanced search. All of these companies have a robust YouTube presence, so don't hesitate to search for other tutorials that might support your research.

If you need more individualized help, do not hesitate to reach out to your librarian!

Leadership Journals

There are lots of reasons browsing a particular leadership journal might benefit your research process.

  • Scholarly publications are often subject-specific, so once you find one article that fulfills your needs, it might be beneficial to look at the entire issue to find related or similar articles.
  • Browsing the most recent issues of a given journal can be a great way to brainstorm research topics or find relevant keywords.
  • Keeping up with the current scholarship is a good way of keeping track of the scholarly conversation of record.

Each of the links above will take you to the Journal record at Vogel Library. Once in the record, you can choose the database that lists the years most useful to your browsing.

Once you open the database, you can browse by issue or "Search within this publication."

Individual Journal Subscription

This journal emphasizes is interdisciplinary and is intended for both practitioners and scholars. It is not available in our database subscriptions, but we have a subscription through the publisher. If you are interested in this journal, you will have to do a separate search. If you are interested in what is trending in the field, keeping an eye on what is being published in this journal will give you some insight.

Technology is fallible

At Vogel, we teach you to use the limiters within the databases to your advantage. This can help narrow your search and improve the efficiency of your searching process. Unfortunately, just using a limiter and trusting it as fact can lead you astray. There are two known issues that you should be aware of, so you are doing a critical check before you take the database at its word.

1. By using the limiter "Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals" you may still get book reviews and editorials or introductions to those journals. Those would not count as a "peer reviewed article" even though they appeared in a "peer reviewed journal." Look for visual clues that should override your reliance on the database limiters.

2. Most of the times, limiting by source works, but occasionally something will slip through the cracks. Often you can tell the difference between a trade publication article and an academic article just by looking at the formatting. If you are struggling to differentiate, you can always look the publication up in the Ulrich's Global Series Directory (link below) that Vogel subscribes to and confirm the source type.
