Preface

The Wartburg College Archives is responsible for the collection and preservation of records that document the college’s history, development, operation, policies, people, activities, and events.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors, and it may not be possible at all times to provide appropriate machinery for reading, viewing or accessing non-print materials. In such circumstances arrangements may have to be made for digital duplication or transfer to occur before access can be provided.

Introduction

Abstract: The Wartburg Quarterly was a publication for the Wartburg Clinton Campus and began in 1906 and continued publishing until 1927. The Wartburg Quarterly was essentially a campus newsletter that was published every ten weeks by the students of Wartburg College in cooperation with the alumni. Each issue had a literary section for students and alumni to submit work for publication. The issues also covered campus news and events, as well as, alumni news and any updates from Wartburg Seminary. The Wartburg Quarterly was the predecessor to the Clarion, which started in 1927.

Collection Description

This collection includes four different series within it. The first is titled Volumes and includes the original, individual issues of the Wartburg Quarterly. The remaining three are hard-cover compilations of the Wartburg Quarterly and are named after the color of their covering. Therefore, the second is titled Blue Compilation, the third is titled Brown Compilation, and the fourth is titled, Red-Spine Compilation. The rest of the finding aid will be divided by the series name.

Physical Description:

Volumes: The Wartburg Quarterly was originally published as a small booklet. The cover designs and colors changed but the format never did, until it became the Clarion. Each booklet measured about 8.6 x 5.9 inches. Generally the older ones are in worse condition, with covers falling off and the edges torn, while the more recent ones are in relatively good condition.

Blue Compilation: This series is formatted as hardcover books with a blue cover. This series is in good condition and measures 8 x 5.5 inches.

Brown Compilation: This series is formatted as hardcover books with a brown cover. The first book in this series, Volume 1-3 has a broken spine, but the rest of the books are in good condition. This series measures about 8.4 x 6 inches.

Red-Spine Compilation: This series is formatted as hardcover books with a red-spine. The first book in this series, Volume 5-6, has a broken spine, and the red-spine covering is almost falling off. The rest of the series is in good condition. There are two separate measurements for this series Volume 5-6 measures 8.6 x 6.5 inches and the rest measure 8.45 x 6 inches.

Dates:

Volumes: This series contains individual copies of volumes 1-3 (1907-1909 *The encompassing dates do not include 1906, the date of the original publication, because this series does not have Volume I no. I, which is the only issue from 1906) and 6-21 (1912-1927) of the Wartburg Quarterly but does not have volumes 4 and 5. There are also some individual issues missing within the volumes.

Blue Compilation: This series includes all issues from volume 1-4 (1906-1910) but does not have any of the remaining volumes (5-21).

Brown Compilation: This series includes all issues from volume 1-18 (1906-1924) but does not have any of the remaining volumes (19-21). There is an apparent gap between the third book, 7-8, and fourth book, 10-12, where volume 9 would fit. However, this is a misprint, and volume 9 is included at the end of the third book, Volume 7-8 [9].

Red-Spine Compilation: This series includes all issues from volume 5-6 (1910-1912), and 9-20 (1914-1926).

Subjects: The collection, as a whole, covers a wide range of campus events, including sports, alumni activity, seminary news, and any changes throughout Wartburg.
