Searching the Web

Google Scholar

Searching by Google Scholar is a way to find articles we don't have indexed in our databases. The nice thing about searching this on campus is that it will link to articles we do have access to (when you are on campus). Get the citation information for ones we don't and fill out an interlibrary loan form. See the tutorial below.

The Open Web

Depending on the focus of your topic, you may want to include websites in your search. There are some websites that would be considered suitable in terms of academic quality, or you could be doing a sociological analysis on items online such as blogs or YouTube comments.

Remember that search engines such as Google will understand putting phrases inside of quotes--for example, "protest music of Thailand"--and there is also an advanced search screen. On the open web, usually, the more search terms and the more limiters you add, the better
