Wartburg Biology Writing Style Guide

To help students use an accurate citation style consistently throughout their undergraduate career the Biology Department has created this style guide. Students should follow this guide when writing papers and assignments for biology courses.

The Wartburg biology department prefers to use the Name-Year citation style in all internal documentation. When citing a reference within the text of a paper or assignment students should include the author(s) last name and the year of publication.

Example: A recent study (Donlea et al. 2009) demonstrated three genes in Drosophila regulate increased sleep need after memory-inducing events.

The bibliography--also known as the "literature cited" section--should list the sources in alphabetical order.
