Agency History

History: The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics opened its doors in 1873 in conjunction with the Sisters of Mercy Catholic order. From 1898, the two organizations parted ways and the University of Iowa opened its own institution for teaching and providing medical care for the locals. The hospital opened its current, seven story building in 1928. Besides healing, UIHC puts emphasis on teaching young professionals and on conducting medical research. Among other notable achievements, it was the first hospital to develop a non-surgical method for correcting clubfoot and the first one to insert a bilateral cochlear implant.
