Peter McLane Collection
Preface
The purpose of the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting is to establish and maintain a permanent collection of materials relating to the history, development and contribution of radio and television in Iowa.
The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors. Due to the complexity and variety of audiovisual formats, most items will need to be digitally duplicated or transferred before access can be provided.
Introduction
Abstract:
Peter McLane’s Collection contains 1/4-inch reel to reel tapes (7-inch reel), audio cassettes and CD-s. The general themes of the collection are media, arts, entertainment and daily news. McLane’s collection dates from 1958 to 1984 and this period of his attribution to KIOA radio station is known as the Peter McLane Era. The research strengths for this collection are pretty impressing because there are audio interviews of Peter McLane explaining everything about KIOA radio and his role as a Program Director of KIOA.

Biographical Sketch
History: Peter McLane is known for broadcasting for the KIOA Radio Station, which reached an instant success in 1957. McLane Came to Des Moines with the hope that he would get into KWMT Radio station, but after getting rejected he got an offer from KIOA Radio and later on became The Program Director of KIOA. The period when McLane started broadcasting to the end of his career is known as the Peter McLane Era, because of KIOA’s enormous success during that time. KIOA Station was one of the three post World War Two stations in Des Moines to go on air. During the beginning of KIOA’s on air transmission in 1948, the station didn’t have a network membership, and this was a brave step for the station. KIOA got its FM construction permit in 1948 as well, but didn’t use it in the beginning. One of the buildings of the station was the only building to support an FM antenna.
