Preface

The purpose of the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting is to establish and maintain a permanent collection of materials relating to the history, development and contribution of radio and television in Iowa.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors. Due to the complexity and variety of audiovisual formats, most items will need to be digitally duplicated or transferred before access can be provided.

Introduction

Abstract: This collection includes broadcast recordings with a wide range of topics, many of which were covered by Cary J. Hahn. Some topics include politics, religion, military, and celebrations. Recordings are archived on VCR tapes, U-Matic tapes, and film reels. Dates range from 1955 to 2007.

Biographical Sketch/Station History

History: KGAN-TV is a CBS-affiliated broadcast station that is licensed out of Cedar Rapids, IA. The station began in 1953 and was originally named WMT-TV. It now serves Eastern Iowa by providing coverage on local and national news, sports, and weather.

Before coming to KGAN-TV, Cary J. Hahn worked in the Navy and ran the radio and television station on a ship near Vietnam. After his tour, he came back to work at several stations in the Midwest. Hahn eventually found his place at CBS2, and became known as the Iowa Traveler. He continued to work there for the next 25 years, and later became the News Director at KMRY radio station in Cedar Rapids.
