Preface
The purpose of the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting is to establish and maintain a permanent collection of materials relating to the history, development and contribution of radio and television in Iowa.
The Archives is committed to providing access to its holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors. Due to the complexity and variety of audiovisual formats, most items will need to be digitally reformatted before access can be provided.

Station History
History: KDPS-TV (Channel 11) was an educational television station run by the Des Moines Public Schools. It launched in 1959 and had a tower on top of Des Moines Technical High School near downtown. The station produced some of the earliest locally produced educational programming, classroom instruction videos called “chalk talks” intended for broadcast and use in schools across the viewing area. The station was purchased by the State of Iowa in 1969 to become part of the Iowa Educational Broadcasting Network, which later became Iowa Public Television. With the purchase, the station’s call letters changed to KDIN, and the state constructed a new, larger, tower to increase the station’s signal reach in Western Iowa.
