Preface
The Wartburg College Archives is responsible for the collection and preservation of records that document the college’s history, development, operation, policies, people, activities, and events.
The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors, and it may not be possible at all times to provide appropriate machinery for reading, viewing or accessing non-print materials. Introduction
Abstract: Castle Tales published its first volume in the February of 1949. It was a college literary magazine that contained artwork, writing, and pictures submitted by Wartburg Students. Fifteen issues were published under the name Castle Tales before the title was shortened to The Castle in 1958. The initial issue of The Castle did not have a volume number, although it was the 10th volume published. However, the following four volumes were labeled sequentially, using the 1958 issue of The Castle as the origin (the 11th volume was marked as v. II, the 12th volume was marked as v. III, etc.). This made it appear that The Castle was a new publication, however, this trend did not continue as the 1964 issue of the magazine was labeled as the 16th volume, thereby going back to the original numbering with the 1949 issue as its origin. That is why the 60th Anniversary edition of The Castle is the 63rd volume instead of the 60th. That is also why there are not two series or collections for the two titles of this publication. The last issue in the archives is volume 70 issue 1, published in the Fall of 2015. Also included in this collections are a few miscellaneous business reports and submission posters for The Castle.

Subjects: Wartburg College’s Centennial is celebrated in the 1952 publication, volume 4 issue 1. The first issue with the title The Castle appears in 1958 [v.10]. From 1967-1968 The Castle was printed horizontally for the 19th and 20th volume. The Spring 1969 publication, volume 21, was dedicated to Dr. A. W. Swensen. The 28th volume from 1974 was published as a small folder with loose leaf inserts, while the Spring 1978 [v. 32] was published in newspaper format. In 2003, volume 58 issue 1 was published with four alternative covers that, when placed together, make a castle. In 2009, the second issue of the 63rd volume published the 60th anniversary edition of The Castle (refer to the abstract).
