Preface

The Wartburg College Archives is responsible for the collection and preservation of records that document the college’s history, development, operation, policies, people, activities, and events.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors, and it may not be possible at all times to provide appropriate machinery for reading, viewing or accessing non-print materials. In such circumstances arrangements may have to be made for digital duplication or transfer to occur before access can be provided.

Introduction

Abstract: The Wartburg Magazine is the latest iteration of Wartburg’s information publication; it was the successor to the Wartburg Bulletin and the Wartburg Review. It began publication in 1981 in a newspaper format. This version lasted through three issues and was subsequently replaced by the magazine format in 1984. Each volume has between three and four issues, however, recently the magazine has only been publishing three issues per volume: fall (1), spring (2), and summer (3). The context has shifted over the years appeal more specifically to alumni, rather than students. It is still being published today (2019).

Scope and Content Note

Extent: This collection includes 107 folders contained in fifteen 12 ½ x 10 ½ inch boxes, and one 18 ½ x 13 ½ x 3 inch box.

Physical Description: The first three issues are in newspaper format, while the rest are printed in a magazine format. The newspapers are slightly torn, the magazines are generally in good condition.

Dates: 1981-2022

This collection appears to have all the issues of the Wartburg Magazine ranging from its initial series, 1981-1982, to its current form, 1984-present (2017). There was an apparent numbering mix-up in the early 2000s, where Volume 17, no. 3 was the spring 2002 issue, and Volume 18 no. 1 was the fall 2001 issue. It is initially unclear how the issues should be correctly ordered. The issues in question are contained in box ten.

Subjects: The Wartburg Magazine deals mostly with alumni news and different ways in which alumni can stay connected. It has some campus news and student recognitions, but most of the articles are written by alumni, or on alumni, to highlight and news or accomplishments in their lives.

Related Material:

  • Wartburg Review
