Location History

History: A teacher training school led by Georg Grossmann was established in Waverly in 1879, housed first in a vacant hotel and then in a brick structure (Old Main) built by 1880. The college from Mendota moved to Waverly in 1885 and the two programs were collectively called Wartburg College. In 1894 the college was moved to a new campus in Clinton, Iowa, leaving Waverly with just the Teachers Seminary. The next several decades, under the leadership of Friedrich Lutz and August Englebrecht saw the Waverly campus expand its offerings to include winter and evening classes, elementary classes, teacher training for women, and a proseminary which offered a two-year practical course in preparation for the Dubuque Seminary. The growth of Waverly brought into direct competition with the Clinton college, and the future of the two campuses came to a head in the early 1930s.
