Biographical Sketch/Agency History

History:

Wilhelm Loehe – A missionary and pastor from Neuendettelsau, Germany, he helped set up several Lutheran Synods in the US. He sent Georg Grossmann to Saginaw, MI in 1852 to establish a seminary that would eventually be known as Wartburg College. Loehe and Grossman are credited with the founding of Wartburg college in 1852.

Fritschel Family – Sigmund Fritschel was one of the founding members, who was sent by Loehe to the US in 1854, of the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa. He established the Latein Schule (Latin School) in Dubuque not long after what would be known as the Wartburg Theological Seminary was established as well. Sigmund’s brother, Gottfried, arrived in 1857 to assist Grossman in instruction. Children of the brothers would grow up to be students at the various early locations of the college and one, John, would become the president of the college in 1907.
