Location History

History: In 1893, the Iowa Synod approved a land development plan that by design would have established a new home for Wartburg College in Clinton, Iowa at no net cost, by selling off additional land parcels to pay for construction of the new campus. Unfortunately, the financial panic of 1893 caused the failure of the “Clinton Plan,” and the new campus started life in Clinton under a cloud of massive debt. Presidents Otto Kraushaar, John Fritschel, and Otto Proehl led the school through its transition from a traditional German Gymnasium structured education to an American style coeducational liberal arts college by 1928. The embrace of a modern educational style was necessary for the continued survival of Clinton’s Wartburg, but the financial difficulties of 1930s brought new challenges and a confrontation with another Wartburg, the one in Waverly, Iowa.
