Preface

The Wartburg College Archives is responsible for the collection and preservation of records that document the college’s history, development, operation, policies, people, activities, and events.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors, and it may not be possible at all times to provide appropriate machinery for reading, viewing or accessing non-print materials. In such circumstances arrangements may have to be made for digital duplication or transfer to occur before access can be provided.

Biographical Sketch

History: Ronald Matthias graduated from Wartburg College in 1954, and then entered into the U.S. Army for two years. He earned his Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Chicago. Matthias then returned to teach in the history department at Wartburg in 1959. Other positions held by Matthias include dean of faculty from 1970-1975, vice president for administration and finance, and Artist Series director. He retired in 1996, but continued to be the director of the Artist Series until 1998. After that he served as interim vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty for a year. His publications in include Still on the move: Wartburg College: 1852-2002 and The Know Nothings in Iowa.
