Examples of How to Use AI

  • Generating ideas and inspiration that can get you started on a project or assignment
  • Generating citations
  • Generating practice problems to help study
  • Proofreading and citation generation

Scenario 1:

A professor asks you to do some research on a topic and you don't know exactly what direction you want to go. AI may be able to help you narrow down the topic. In general, AI can be useful for creative thinking or brainstorming.

Scenario 2:

AI could help you proofread your text to ensure grammar and spelling is correct. These AIs are often already built into text editors like Word. Grammarly is an AI that is designed especially for this purpose and can be added as an add-on in some applications or browsers.

Scenario 3:

A common use of AI is citation generation. Beware though, AI often can't handle the nuances of each style. You'll need to check each citation for accuracy and formatting. OWL at Purdue is a great resource for APA, MLA, and Chicago. Vogel Library has resources for many more styles as well.

Scenario 4:

You could practice a debate with AI, to hone in your skills. But, beware. You might get a laugh when AI goes off the rails, as it is prone to do from time to time.

Scenario 5:

Language learning. There are AI tools out there that can help people practice languages, including having an AI person to practice speaking a new language.
