Preface

The Wartburg College Archives is responsible for the collection and preservation of records that document the college’s history, development, operation, policies, people, activities, and events.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors, and it may not be possible at all times to provide appropriate machinery for reading, viewing or accessing non-print materials. In such circumstances arrangements may have to be made for digital duplication or transfer to occur before access can be provided.

Biographical Sketch

History: Edwin J. Neumann was born in 1923 and died in 2013. He grew up in Clinton, IA and graduated from Wartburg College in 1944. Neumann went on to earn a master’s degree and doctorate in American Literature from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. At the American University of Beirut, Neumann was the English department chairman for several years. He then went on to become a cultural attache for the State Department, and retired from the federal Education Department. Over the years, Neumann made several generous donations to Wartburg College. He was married to Mary Mackey and they had two sons.
