A Year with The Saint John's Bible
In 1998, Saint John's Abbey and University commissioned renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated Bible.
Wartburg College invited the public to explore this work of art that unites an ancient Benedictine tradition with the technology and vision of today, illuminating the Word of God for a new millennium.
Two volumes of The Heritage Edition, Pentateuch and Gospels & Acts, were on display at Wartburg College in Vogel Library throughout 2014.
"To ignite the spiritual imagination of people around the world of all faith journeys."
The Saint John’s Bible Heritage Program is an international initiative for individuals and institutions to explore the artistic and spiritual beauty of The Saint John’s Bible. Through its primary offering, the Heritage Edition, communities around the world can use this gift of sacred art to ignite their spiritual imaginations for generations to come.
The Heritage Edition is a full-size reproduction of the original masterpiece. Each of the seven volumes that make up The Saint John’s Bible is approximately 2 feet tall by 3 feet wide when open and weighs between 30-60 pounds.
Thanks to the creative leadership of Donald Jackson, the artistic director of the original manuscript, the Heritage Edition is a work of art in its own right. Leading manuscript experts around the world who have seen the Heritage Edition recognize it as the highest quality reproduction ever made.
Wartburg College displayed all 7 volumes of The Saint John's Bible at the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery in the Bachman Fine Arts Center from January 10-Feb. 21, 2014. The exhibit also featured framed illuminations from Heritage Edition of The Saint John's Bible.

After the exhibit closed, two volumes of the Heritage Edition, Gospels & Acts and the Pentateuch, will remain at Wartburg College for the rest of 2014. These volumes will be displayed at various locations on the campus, including Vogel Library, for the entire year. Special exhibits and events will be ongoing.
The Saint John's Bible exhibit and year-in-residence was made possible by a generous gift from Dr. William Hamm. Walnut for the display cases was donated by Pastor Larry Trachte, and all cases were built by master woodworker Julie Frantsen.
