Allen, Brian Video Collection

Abstract: Audiovisual materials, ca. 1978-2006. Includes VHS recordings of Iowa (Des Moines) television stations, WHO and KCAU, as well as national programs like CBS News, Today, and Laugh-In. Iowa programs are mostly news coverage, such as nightly news, but also include election coverage in 1978 and 1980.

Blackhawk Broadcasting Corporate Collection

Abstract: Blackhawk Broadcasting was the parent company of KWWL radio and television stations out of Waterloo, Iowa. The company was founded by Ralph J. McElroy, and later run by Robert Buckmaster until its sale in 1980. This collection is primarily legal documents pertaining to the Black Hawk Broadcasting Company based in Waterloo, Iowa. The majority of the documents are related to the purchase and sale of several of Black Hawk’s various properties.

Brockman, Cliff Collection

Abstract: The collection is material from 1973 – 2018 during Cliff Brockman’s time as an Iowa broadcast journalist and college journalism educator. Included in the collection is material from both those careers. Brockman was very active in the Iowa Broadcast News Association (IBNA) and the collection includes material related to his work with the IBNA. He was also very active in church and community affairs and there a few folders pertaining to that work.

Brubaker, Mary Video Collection

Davison, George Collection

Abstract: This collection contains WHO Radio materials donated by George Davison, a former host at WHO Radio. The collection consists mostly of ¼-inch audiotapes and CDs but also includes VHS and Beta type videotapes. Main subjects of the recordings are newscasts, politics and sports.

Des Moines Air Check Collection

Abstract: This collection contains recordings of TV series air checks for shows such as the Jimmy Dean Show, the Grand Ole Opry, Country Music Time, and Dennis the Menace. WHO Radio recordings are also included. Dates range from 1964 to 1972.

Greco, Leo Collection

Abstract: Leo Greco was a band leader and radio show host, entertaining Iowans for seventy years. He led the Leo Greco Band in the 1950s and 1960s, and was the long-time host of the "Variety Time" radio show on WMT radio, from the early 1970s to his death in 2011. This collection includes recordings of Leo Greco television program and Leo Greco and his Pioneers.

Homemaker Newsletter Collection

Abstract: Homemaker radio cooking shows were popular from the early days of radio, where female hosts shared recipes and other aspects of farm life across the radio waves. This collection includes newsletters from the following shows: Home Fare (WMT-TV), Billie Oakley's Open Line, KMA Guide, Jessie's Homemaker, Kitchen Klatter, Jackie's Newsletter, Florence Falk, and The Farmer's Wife (KMA).

KCRG Television Collection

Abstract: KCRG was originally owned by the Cedar Rapids Gazette, and first went on the air in 1953. It is the CBS affiliate for the Cedar Rapids metro area. This collection contains open-reel audio tape of broadcasts.

KDPS Television Collection

Abstract: KDPS-TV (Channel 11) was an educational television station run by the Des Moines Public Schools. It launched in 1959 and had a tower on top of Des Moines Technical High School near downtown. The station produced some of the earliest locally produced educational programming, classroom instruction videos called “chalk talks” intended for broadcast and use in schools across the viewing area. The station was purchased by the State of Iowa in 1969 to become part of the Iowa Educational Broadcasting Network, which later became Iowa Public Television. 

This collection consists of seven educational films on Foundations of Mathematics that were filmed in Des Moines for television broadcast. Created in 1965, they are labeled for release in 1967. There are also 2 general films.

KGAN Television Collection

Abstract: KGAN was originally WMT-TV, and first signed on in September 1953. It was licensed to serve the Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Dubuque markets as a CBS affiliate. This collection contains news, sports, weather and other programming, ca. 1953-1990.

KLWW Radio Collection

Abstract: KLWW (1450 AM) now broadcasts with the call letters KMRY, a radio station out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In September 2002 the station was inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as KLWW (it's 1960s version). This collection contains broadcast recordings on reel-to-reel audiotapes.

KWWL Television Collection

Abstract: KWWL Channel 7 television went on the air in 1953, after a long legal battle won by R.J. McElroy and Black Hawk Broadcasting, who also owned KWWL-AM radio. KWWL-TV was the Waterloo, Iowa NBC affiliate, but once it built a larger tower in the late 1960s, its viewing area expanded to Cedar Rapids/Waterloo/Dubuque. With the addition of popular Iowa broadcasters Grant Price and Craig Johnson, KWWL led the ratings for eastern Iowa news from the mid-1970s to 2000. 

This collection contains audiovisual items (film, U-matic, Betacam, MII, VHS, DVD, DVCPro) of broadcasts, and paper records of KWWL administration.

KXEL Radio Collection

Abstract: KXEL went on the air July 14, 1942 serving Waterloo and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It broadcast ABC programming, then country music, and later current news/talk. In the early 1950s, KXEL attempted to obtain the television license for Channel 7 but lost a lawsuit over the matter to KWWL. This collection contains broadcast recordings on reel-to-reel audio tapes.

McLane, Peter Collection

Abstract: Peter McLane’s Collection contains 1/4-inch reel to reel tapes (7-inch reel), audio cassettes and CD-s. The general themes of the collection are media, arts, entertainment and daily news. McLane’s collection dates from 1958 to 1984 and this period of his attribution to KIOA radio station is known as the Peter McLane Era. The research strengths for this collection are pretty impressing because there are audio interviews of Peter McLane explaining everything about KIOA radio and his role as a Program Director of KIOA.

Quarton, William B. Collection

Abstract: The collection is material from 1937 – 2005 during William Quarton’s time as owner and general manager of WMT radio and TV in Cedar Rapids. There is also material from Quarton’s service to the National Broadcaster’s Association and the CBS television network board of affiliates, and the White House Conference on International rights. The collection includes a series of First Day Issue stamps that Quarton sent to advertisers as an unusual thank-you promotion for buying advertising on the WMT stations.

WMT Radio Collection

Abstract: WMT originally signed on as WJAM in 1922. It became WMT in 1928 when the station was sold to Harry Shaw, owner of the Waterloo Morning Tribune. He moved the station to Waterloo, but it returned to Cedar Rapids the year following its sale to the Cowles family in 1934.

This collection contains broadcast recordings, promotional materials, artifacts and photographs, including the original WMT microphone, a photograph of station founder "Tex" Perham, printing plates, banners, and more.
