Preface
The Wartburg College Archives is responsible for the collection and preservation of records that document the college’s history, development, operation, policies, people, activities, and events.
The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors, and it may not be possible at all times to provide appropriate machinery for reading, viewing or accessing non-print materials. In such circumstances arrangements may have to be made for digital duplication or transfer to occur before access can be provided.
Introduction
Abstract: This collection includes three yearbook series: The WAHSA, The Warclinian, and The Fortress. The WASHA was published at the Wartburg Normal College on the Waverly Campus in Iowa. The first publication of the WAHSA was in 1919 and the final copy in the archives, dates from 1930-1931. It is believed that WAHSA is an acronym, however, the meaning for which has been lost. The Warclinian was published by Wartburg College on the Clinton, Iowa campus. It was first published in 1930 and the last copy in the archives is from 1934. The Fortress was published by Wartburg College on the Waverly, Iowa campus. It was first published in 1935-1936 after the College’s move to Waverly. The final copy in the Wartburg archives is from 2011 when the publication was discontinued. The books in each series contains pictures of the different campuses and many of the campus improvements throughout the years. They also contain pictures of the students and faculty, however, the later copies of The Fortress do not have yearly pictures of the staff and some do not include portrait pictures of the students. All of the yearbooks have sections dedicated to the recognized clubs on campus.
Scope and Content Note
Extent: This collection includes 267 yearbooks, in 102 boxes, throughout 3 series.
Physical Description: These are finished, published copies of school yearbooks made from paper. The early editions of the WAHSA are bound by string and staples. Within the yearbooks are pictures printed on paper. The 1973 edition of The Fortress consists of two softcover volumes within a cardboard box. The Archives has three copies of the 1973 yearbook in its original format, and one copy in two hardcover volumes.

Subjects: Each Yearbook records the year’s sports accomplishments and any major activities on campus. Some of the later editions of The Fortress included records on national and worldly events.

Warclinian Yearbook, 1930-1932, 1934. Includes the annual publication of the Warclinian yearbook in its finished edition. Series includes 13 books in 5 boxes. Arranged chronologically by year. Contents are fit according to how many books can fit a box; leads to some boxes having multiple years in them.
Fortress, 1935-2011. Includes the annual publication of The Fortress yearbook in its finished edition. Series includes 224 books in 87 boxes. Arranged chronologically by year. Contents are fit according to how many books can fit a box; leads to some boxes having multiple years in them. The final box also contains miscellaneous items connected to the Fortress, including awards won by the publication and memos from the publication.
