Preface

The Wartburg College Archives is responsible for the collection and preservation of records that document the college’s history, development, operation, policies, people, activities, and events.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors, and it may not be possible at all times to provide appropriate machinery for reading, viewing or accessing non-print materials. In such circumstances arrangements may have to be made for digital duplication or transfer to occur before access can be provided.

Introduction

Abstract: The Wartburg Review began its publication in March 1963 as the successor to the Wartburg Bulletin; and like the Wartburg Bulletin, the Wartburg Review acted as an informational publication about Wartburg College at the Waverly Campus. It was initially published as a pamphlet, before it switched to a newspaper format. In the pamphlet format, the Review was published once a month, except for August. When it switched to the newspaper format, the Review started to be published bi-monthly. The Wartburg Review was the predecessor to the Wartburg Magazine and ceased publication June 1984, after the third issue of the 23rd [22nd] Volume. During its time, the Review covered campus life on Wartburg, publishing stories about the school’s academic and athletic accomplishments. The duration of the Wartburg Review also saw many changes to the Wartburg campus, both physically and socially, as staff and faculty would retire and be hired, and as the campus grew and construction would begin on new buildings. This publication also covered the alumni news, both personal and professional, and was available to all Wartburgians, students, staff, alumni, and the like.

Scope and Content Note

Extent: This collection consists of 22 folders in 6 boxes. It includes all 179 issues, with multiple copies in some cases.

Physical Description: This collection is in relatively good condition. It includes two formats, pamphlet and newspaper. The pamphlet format was used from Volume 28, no. 1 (the first volume published) to Volume 10, no. 7 July, 1972. The Newspaper format began in August 1972, Volume 10, no. 8 and continued until it ceased publication.

Dates: This collection includes the entire publication of the Wartburg Review, but there are some discrepancies that make it appear that there are some issues and volumes missing.

  • The Wartburg Review’s first issue is labeled Volume 28, no. 1 because it was meant to show a continuation of publication from the Wartburg Bulletin, and the second issue is labeled Volume 1, no. 1, causing an apparent gap. However, Volume 28, no. 1 was published in March 1963 and Volume 1, no. 1 was published in April 1963, so there is no actual gap.
  • Volume 2 begins at issue 3, making it seem that Volume 2, no. 1 and 2 are missing. However, Volume 1, no. 10 was published in February 1964 and is proceeded by the March 1964 publication, Volume 2, no. 3, meaning there is no gap in publication.
  • The June 1964 Volume 2, no. 6 publication is misprinted as ‘Volume 6, no. 2’. This is wrong and has been corrected in pencil by a previous archivist.
  • Through the first nine volumes, this collection has publications for every month except August because there was no issue published for August.
  • At the format switch from pamphlet to newspaper, the publishing dates also changed, as the Wartburg Review transitioned from being published monthly to bi-monthly. Volume 10 reflects this change as it only contains 10 issues instead of 11 like the previous volumes. No issue is missing, the publication transition caused this volume to only have 10 issues. Likewise, the publication transition lead to only six issues being published per volume from then on.
  • There is also an apparent gap between Volume 15 and Volume 17, however, this is also due to a misprint. What is labeled volume 17 is actually volume 16 (as shown in brackets in the container listing). This is known because Volume 15 ends in December 1977 and Volume 17 begins in February 1978. This trend continues until the end of publication.

Subjects: The Wartburg Review covered campus life at the Wartburg campus in Waverly. It covered transitions in prudency and staff. It also covered campus construction projects and reported on the construction process for many of the building presently on campus, like the Whitehouse Business Center, and buildings that no longer exist. It also contains information on important professional and personal alumni news through its duration.
