Introduction

Abstract: The Wartburg Bulletin was an informational publication about Wartburg College. It began in 1916 and ended publication in 1962 when it was continued under the title, Wartburg Review. The Wartburg Bulletin consists of two series. The first lasted from 1916-1933 and had 17 ‘series’ in it. The second series lasted from 1935-1962 and had 27 ‘volumes’ in it. The first series generally has more pictures of the historical Wartburg campus, while the second series has information in it, like sports schedules, staff changes, things generally geared towards student/campus life.

Scope and Content Note

Extent: This collection is contained in 6 boxes, holding 43 folders. The first series has 17 ‘series’ and the second series has 27 ‘volumes’ and an information bulletin in May 1935.

Physical Description: The early copies of the Wartburg Bulletin were generally published as a small, vertically stapled pamphlet. Some of these early copies would also be stapled horizontally. Later copies took on a more newspaper-like format that lead to several variations throughout the life of the publication. A special edition was published in the form of a small, black velvet covered notebook, it was volume 1 no. 6 in 1936. Series 1, ‘series’ 3, May 1919 is a double copy with both no. 3 and 4 in it.

Dates: This publication ran from 1916-1962. The first series ran from 1916-1933 and the second series ran from 1935-1962.

Many of the ‘series’ and ‘volumes’ are missing individual issues (no.’s), however, the larger gaps include all of ‘series’ 5, 1920-1921 and ‘volume’ 2, 1936-1937.

It is important to note, that many of the issues have been mislabeled and don’t reflect the proper volume or numbering. The most series occurrence of mislabeling happened from 1950 through 1952. The volume and issue numbering is incorrect from volume 14 [15] to volume 15[17]. For the correct numbering, refer to the container listing.

NOTE: this publication has two series in it, and the first series refers to its volumes as ‘series’. In order to distinguish on from the other, when the word series is referring to one of the two publications, then it will not have quotation marks ("), and when it is referring to the volumes in the first series the word ‘series’ will have quotation marks ("). Additionally, the word volume will also have quotation marks (") around it when it is referring to the ‘volumes’ in the second series.

Subjects: The Wartburg Bulletin covered campus new and events, including staff changes, campus construction, sports schedules, student honors, etc. It also has pictures of campus, staff members, and students throughout its issues.

Content Description

The Wartburg Bulletin contains two series, as publication began in 1916 and was restarted in 1935 after seventeen ‘series’ were published. There are few discernable differences between the two, so the first series will be referred to as Series 1 and the second series will be referred to as Series 2.

Series 1 (1916-1933): This series consisted of 16 folders in 2 boxes. Series 1 appears to have been a recruiting device for potential students. It mostly included what the college offered students, and if there were any changes around the campus. It had pictures of classrooms and campus buildings to show prospects the campus. Series 1 was a quarterly publication, being published four times a year. Initially, there was an irregularity with when the bulletin would be published, however, in 1924 a regular schedule was put into effect, and from then on, until the end of Series 1, it was published regularly. This regular schedule went as follows: no. 1 in March, no. 2 in June, no. 3 in September, no. 4 in December.

Series 2 (1935- 1962): This series consisted of 27 folders in 4 boxes. Series 2 appeared to be catered more towards alumni and current students. It listed campus events and any announcements that students needed to know about. The second series also included some special announcements that were unscheduled, but let students and alumni know when important issues arose on campus. Series 2 was published bi-monthly, six times a year. The first regular schedule went as follows: no. 1 in March, no. 2 in May, no. 3 in July, no. 4 in September, no. 5 in November, no. 6 in January. This schedule ran from 1935 until 1951, when it was disrupted by mislabeling. A new publishing pattern arose from this and it went as follows: no. 1 in January, no. 2 in March, no. 3 in May, no. 4 in July, no. 5 in September, no. 6 in November.
