Location History

History: Founded in 1852 by Wilhelm Lohe and his teacher, Georg Grossmann, as a "seminary" for parish school teachers. It was the first of its kind in America. The school was first housed in an abandoned store building, then in a Pilgerhaus (a temporary shelter for newly arrived immigrants). Tensions between Grossmann and the Missouri synod leadership in Saginaw caused the school to move to Dubuque, Iowa in September 1853.
