Preface

The purpose of the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting is to establish and maintain a permanent collection of materials relating to the history, development and contribution of radio and television in Iowa.

The Archives is committed to providing access to its holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors. Due to the complexity and variety of audiovisual formats, most items will need to be digitally reformatted before access can be provided.

 

Introduction

Abstract: This collection consists of writings and works of Gustav Neumann, who was a published author and English professor at Wartburg College. Gustav was also the father to Edwin, for whom the current auditorium is named. Gustav Neumann was a very religious man with a long teaching career at the collegiate level (more than 50 years).

Extent: 39 boxes (approximately 15 linear feet).

Biographical History

History: Gustav Neumann was born in 1888 in Eldorado, Iowa, as the youngest of five children. For college, Neumann studied at Wartburg College in Clinton, Iowa. After graduating, he attending the University of Berlin. He taught German at the University of Iowa, and later returned to Wartburg to teach in 1910. While teaching, he married and had two sons. He worked at Wartburg for 54 years and received two honorary degrees during that time: one from Capital University and one from Wartburg. Gustav Neumann published eight books during his career. He died in 1965.
