Preface

The Wartburg College Archives is responsible for the collection and preservation of records that document the college’s history, development, operation, policies, people, activities, and events.

The Archives is committed to providing access to holdings. However, access to some items may be restricted by their fragile condition or by contractual agreement with the donors, and it may not be possible at all times to provide appropriate machinery for reading, viewing or accessing non-print materials. In such circumstances arrangements may have to be made for digital duplication or transfer to occur before access can be provided.

Biographical Sketch

History: Dr. John Chellevold was born in 1906 and died in 1986. He earned his B.A. at St. Olaf College, and his Ph.D. at LeHigh University, Bethlehem, Pa. He was a retired Naval commander, and served during World War II. From 1951-1974, Dr. Chellevold served as a professor of mathematics, the dean of faculty, and vice president at Wartburg College. He retired as professor of mathematics and dean in 1974. Dr. Chellevold also served as president of the Iowa Academy of Science from 1966-1967. He later received the Academy of Science Award of Merit in 1976, and was also named Outstanding Educator in America in 1971.
