Mary Brubaker Video Collection

Abstract: KCCI began broadcasting in 1955 as KRNT. It is the CBS affiliate station in Des Moines, Iowa. This collection contains interviews on U-matic and Betacam videotape conducted by KCCI news reporter Mary Brubaker, ca. 1988-1990s.

KGAN (CBS, Cedar Rapids)


KGAN Television Collection

Abstract: KGAN was originally WMT-TV, and first signed on in September 1953. It was licensed to serve the Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Dubuque markets as a CBS affiliate. This collection contains news, sports, weather and other programming, ca. 1953-1990.

Cary J. Hahn Collection

Abstract: This collection includes broadcast recordings with a wide range of topics, many of which were covered by Cary J. Hahn. Some topics include politics, religion, military, and celebrations. Recordings are archived on VCR tapes, U-Matic tapes, and film reels.

KCRG (ABC, Cedar Rapids)

KCRG was originally owned by the Cedar Rapids Gazette, and first went on the air in 1953. It is the CBS affiliate for the Cedar Rapids metro area. This collection contains open-reel audio tape of broadcasts.

KWWL (NBC, Waterloo)

KWWL Television Collection

Abstract: KWWL Channel 7 television went on the air in 1953, after a long legal battle won by R.J. McElroy and Black Hawk Broadcasting, who also owned KWWL-AM radio. KWWL-TV was the Waterloo, Iowa NBC affiliate, but once it built a larger tower in the late 1960s, its viewing area expanded to Cedar Rapids/Waterloo/Dubuque. With the addition of popular Iowa broadcasters Grant Price and Craig Johnson, KWWL led the ratings for eastern Iowa news from the mid-1970s to 2000. 

This collection contains audiovisual items (film, U-matic, Betacam, MII, VHS, DVD, DVCPro) of broadcasts, and paper records of KWWL administration.

Liz Mathis Collection

Abstract: Audiovisual materials, 1986-1997. This collection contains the work of Liz Mathis, a former reporter and anchor at KWWL. The Mathis collection consists mostly of VHS and U-matic type videocassettes. Main subjects of the recordings are politics, newscasts and documentaries.

Brian Allen Video Collection

Abstract: Audiovisual materials, ca. 1978-2006. Includes VHS recordings of Iowa (Des Moines) television stations, WHO and KCAU, as well as national programs like CBS News, Today, and Laugh-In. Iowa programs are mostly news coverage, such as nightly news, but also include election coverage in 1978 and 1980.

KDPS (Des Moines)


KDPS Television Collection

Abstract: KDPS-TV (Channel 11) was an educational television station run by the Des Moines Public Schools. It launched in 1959 and had a tower on top of Des Moines Technical High School near downtown. The station produced some of the earliest locally produced educational programming, classroom instruction videos called “chalk talks” intended for broadcast and use in schools across the viewing area. The station was purchased by the State of Iowa in 1969 to become part of the Iowa Educational Broadcasting Network, which later became Iowa Public Television. 

This collection consists of seven educational films on Foundations of Mathematics that were filmed in Des Moines for television broadcast. Created in 1965, they are labeled for release in 1967.
